Demolition of the former General Hospital building at 941 Queen Street East is scheduled to begin Wednesday.
Green Infrastructure Partners (GIP) conducted a walkthrough and inspection of the building on Tuesday and has confirmed that demolition work will begin at the rear of the building, facing the waterfront.
The City of Sault Ste. Marie will hold a media availability at the former hospital site on Wednesday at 10 a.m. with Mayor Matthew Shoemaker and City officials available to answer questions.

In preparation for demolition, GIP has removed 380 loads of debris from the site, weighing approximately 4,007 tonnes, since fall 2025.
GIP signed an agreement to purchase the site in October 2025. As part of the agreement, the building is required to be demolished within 12 months, with a master plan for development to follow within 36 months and building permits for construction within five years.
The redevelopment of the former hospital site represents an important opportunity to return a long-vacant property to productive use. Through potential residential and/or commercial development on the site, the City anticipates a full return on its initial investment within approximately six to 12 years. Over a 20-year period, projected municipal tax revenue is estimated at $1.2 million to $6.9 million under a medium-density scenario and $15.3 million to $20.9 million under a high-density scenario.
