Active Transportation Planning

What is Active Transportation?

Active transportation refers to any form of travel that uses human power to move people from one place to another. It includes walking, cycling, wheeling, rolling, and other forms of travel that promote physical activity. E-micromobility devices, such as e-bikes and e-scooters, are also an important part of the active transportation network, helping more people choose convenient, sustainable ways to travel.

What is an Active Transportation Master Plan?

The City of Sault Ste. Marie has developed a draft Active Transportation Master Plan (ATMP) that outlines a long-term vision to support walking, cycling, and rolling throughout the city. The plan provides direction for enhancing both physical and social infrastructure, with the goal of creating a safer, more accessible, and better-connected active transportation network for residents of all ages and abilities.

Council Approval of the Active Transportation Master Plan

The Active Transportation Master Plan was presented to and approved by City Council on July 14, 2025. The Council report provides background information on the development of the plan, key recommendations, and the process that helped shape the City’s future direction for active transportation.

The ATMP proposes a comprehensive network of sidewalks, bike routes, and multi-use trails to improve safety, increase transportation options, and link key destinations across the city. PDF versions of the ATMP maps are available for download here:
