The City of Sault Ste. Marie is developing a Community Climate Change Adaptation Plan (the Plan) to understand how changing weather and extreme weather events are affecting our community and what we can do to prepare.
The Plan will identify practical actions the City and community can take to reduce the impacts of extreme weather, protect the things we value, and make Sault Ste. Marie more resilient for the future. The actions identified through the Plan can be considered as part of future City planning, programs and decision-making.
Why is the City developing this?
Our planet and climate are changing, and some types of extreme weather may become more frequent or severe as the Earth warms. These changes can affect our homes, roads, buildings, parks, natural areas, health, businesses, City services and everyday activities. You may have already noticed some of these impacts. Climate change adaptation means preparing for these changes and taking steps to reduce their impacts on our community.
Have your say
Your experience matters. You may have noticed flooding on a particular street, damage from a storm, poor air quality from wildfire smoke, changes to winter recreation, or other weather-related impacts in your neighbourhood or workplace.
By sharing what you have seen and experienced, you can help the City understand where problems are happening, how they affect people and places, and what could be done to better prepare.

Upcoming in-person community engagement
The City will also host an in-person opportunity for residents to learn more about the project and share their ideas for climate resilience in late fall 2026. Additional details will be posted on this page when confirmed.
How your input will be used
Survey responses and feedback received through partner engagement will help inform the City’s climate change risk assessment and the development of recommended adaptation actions. A summary of what we hear will be prepared as part of the planning process.
The City’s engagement process includes surveys, discussions with community partners and interested First Nations and Métis communities, City staff workshops, and in-person community engagement. The Plan is intended to identify practical measures that can be integrated into municipal planning and decision-making over time.
