The City of Sault Ste. Marie Environmental Sustainability Committee (ESC), with support from Save on Energy and Sault College, is pleased to announce a free public talk by Dr. Bruce Lourie, one of Canada’s leading environmental policy experts. Titled “The New Bottom Line: Building a Resilient Low-Carbon Economy,” the event will take place on Thursday, May 7, 2026, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Sault College, (Room M1030).
Dr. Lourie, recognized for his leadership in Ontario’s coal phase-out and his work advancing clean energy and sustainable finance, will explore how Sault Ste. Marie can continue building a resilient, low-carbon economy through climate action. His presentation will highlight how sustainability initiatives can create economic opportunities, drive innovation, attract investment and support job creation.
“As we navigate the transition to a more sustainable future, it’s critical to recognize the economic opportunities that come with climate action,” said Donna Hilsinger, Chair of the Environmental Sustainability Committee. “This presentation will provide valuable insights into how communities like ours can leverage green innovation and clean technology to strengthen our economy and foster sustainability.”
Dr. Lourie will share his expertise on how Sault Ste. Marie can further leverage its strengths in renewable energy, green steel, and emerging sectors such as clean technology and artificial intelligence. The session will also examine how collaboration across industries and sectors can drive both environmental progress and economic growth, positioning Sault Ste. Marie as a leader for clean innovation.
The event is free to attend, but space is limited and advance registration is required. Doors open at 11 a.m., with a light lunch served at 11:30 a.m. Dr. Lourie’s presentation will be from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m., followed by a question-and-answer session.
