City seeks input on climate change impacts on vulnerable populations

Climate Change

The City of Sault Ste. Marie is inviting community members and representatives of organizations that serve vulnerable people to an open house focused on how climate change and extreme weather may affect community members.

The Climate Change Impacts on Vulnerable Populations Open House will take place on Thursday, November 12, 2026, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the lobby of the Ronald A. Irwin Civic Centre, located at 99 Foster Drive. Attendees will have the opportunity to share their experiences, concerns, and ideas to help inform the City’s Community Climate Change Adaptation Plan (CCAP).

The City is developing the CCCAP to better understand local climate risks and identify practical measures to help the community prepare for and respond to climate-related impacts. Input from people who may face greater challenges during extreme weather events, as well as organizations that support them, will help identify local needs and inform potential adaptation measures.

“Community input is essential to understanding how climate change affects people differently and identifying actions that respond to local needs,” said Emily Cormier, the City’s Sustainability Coordinator. “We encourage community members and organizations to share their perspectives and help inform climate adaptation planning in Sault Ste. Marie.”

Feedback gathered through the open house will help shape the City’s adaptation planning and inform how climate-related risks are considered in municipal infrastructure, services, and decision-making.
