Water Wheelchairs

Bellevue Water wheelchair

The City of Sault Ste. Marie is pleased to offer new water wheelchairs for youth, available at the Bellevue Park and Manzo Park splash pads, and a beach wheelchair for adults at Pointe Des Chenes beach.

This initiative reflects the City’s continued efforts to enhance accessibility and foster inclusivity across public spaces. By introducing these water wheelchairs, children with mobility-related disabilities can enjoy water-based activities alongside their family and friends.

The youth water wheelchair is designed for children with mobility disabilities, ensuring an equitable experience in water-based activities. Its mesh seat, adjustable positioning straps, angle-adjustable seat, and backrest accommodate many positioning needs while creating a comfortable way to enjoy water features.

“We are excited to introduce the youth water wheelchair and the adult beach wheelchair to our community amenities,” said Diane Morrell, Accessibility Coordinator for the City of Sault Ste. Marie. This aligns with our ongoing commitment to creating a more inclusive and accessible City for all residents. We encourage families to use this free service and create lasting memories.”

The wheelchairs are available free of charge. Families can reserve the equipment by completing the online form on the City’s website at saultstemarie.ca/waterwheelchair. Equipment is available on a first-come, first-served basis and must be used with the assistance of a caregiver or attendant, as the chairs are not self-propelled.

Further supporting accessible recreation, the City has also added a youth change table to the accessible change room at Bellevue Park.
