Golden Eagle Feather markers to honour Indigenous Athletes in the Sault Ste. Marie Sports Hall of Fame

A new chapter in local sports history is unfolding at the Sault Ste. Marie Sports Hall of Fame, with the launch of a meaningful initiative to honour the Indigenous heritage of athletes enshrined within its ranks.

Beginning this year, a Golden Eagle Feather marker will be placed beside the names of Indigenous inductees on the Sports Hall of Fame display wall located at the Northern Community Centre. More than a symbol of athletic achievement, the feather recognizes the spirit, resilience, and cultural identity that have guided these athletes to achieve excellence.

“In Anishinaabe teachings, the Eagle feather is sacred, representing respect, courage, strength, wisdom, power, and dedication. A feather is not simply lost, it is released with purpose, carrying strength to those who need it,” said Kaitlyn Neveu, Anishnaabe E-Wiidookaaged. “With this initiative, the Sports Hall of Fame ensures Indigenous athletes are visibly and respectfully celebrated for their contributions to both sport and community.”

Renowned cyclist and a 2025 local inductee, Lawrence Foster, expressed deep pride in receiving the recognition.

“The Ontario Métis Aboriginal Association was my first sponsor, helping me to purchase my first bike when I was racing. I have never forgotten this help and have dedicated my life to helping others get involved with mountain biking and sports. I will proudly display the Eagle feather with this award.”

Softball legend Darren Zack, who has broken countless records, including his own strikeout benchmark of 150 in 1995, reflected on the recognition’s personal and cultural meaning.

“Being Indigenous means everything to me. It is who I am. I grew up across from the ball field, and it was all I did. I am proud of who I am. It took a long time to get where I am, but it was worth it. I love the game; I love everything about it. For our Indigenous youth, just keep practicing. Practice makes almost perfect, and you have to love it.”

The Golden Eagle Feather initiative aligns with the City of Sault Ste. Marie’s commitment to Truth and Reconciliation fosters visibility, cultural recognition, and space for Indigenous identity within public institutions. As the markers begin to appear, they stand not only as symbols of sporting excellence but also as reminders of heritage, community, and the strength of Indigenous athletes whose stories continue to inspire future generations.
