Tuesday, June 6, 2023

The City of Sault Ste. Marie is pleased to announce the winner of the 'Mayor for a Day' contest.
Cassianna Somme, a grade 5 student from Holy Cross Catholic School, has been selected as our community's Mayor for a Day. Cassianna submitted an impressive video that showed off what she loves about our community – such as Bellevue Park, including the Splash Pad and Marina, along with the Sault Ste. Marie Museum and downtown murals – and highlighted what she’d like to do as the Mayor for a Day.
Mayor Shoemaker and the City wish to extend congratulations to Cassianna and all of the students who participated in the contest. Through written or video submissions, local youth demonstrated an understanding of municipal governance and operations, along with a passion for Sault Ste. Marie.
Honourable mentions include:

  • Naina Luitel (Anna McCrea Public School)
  • Mia Slukynsky (St. Paul Catholic School)
  • Millie McDonald (Holy Cross Catholic School)
  • Taheem Islam (Anna McCrea Public School)
  • Vivienne Marriott (F.H. Clergue Public School)
“I was very impressed with the hundreds of submissions we received, and I want to recognize all of the local students who took the time to participate,” said Mayor Matthew Shoemaker. “The Mayor for a Day contest is a great way for the City to engage with our local youth, and I’m looking forward to meeting our winner and the honourable mentions at the City Council meeting later this month.”
As the 'Mayor for a Day', Cassianna will get to tour the Civic Centre and meet with Mayor Shoemaker. Her class at Holy Cross Catholic School will receive a pizza party and a visit from the Mayor.
Cassianna will officially open the City Council meeting on June 19. Her video will be played at the beginning of the meeting and students recognized with honourable mentions have been invited to attend the meeting as well.
