Task Force submits proposal to host Canada Water Agency in Sault Ste. Marie

Thursday, December 1, 2022

The Sault Ste. Marie Canada Water Agency Task Force has officially submitted a proposal to host the new Federal government agency that will focus on the best ways to keep our country’s fresh water safe, clean and well-managed.

The full document is available to the public at: saultstemarie.ca/cwa, and a video highlighting Sault Ste. Marie’s proposal is available through the City’s YouTube channel.

The proposal highlights Sault Ste. Marie’s capacity to host the Canada Water Agency. Centrally located within the largest group of freshwater lakes in the world, Sault Ste. Marie’s plentiful natural assets, cultural diversity and local expertise that reaches beyond borders make it an ideal location for the Canada Water Agency.

Mayor Shoemaker and representation from the task force recently met with Federal government officials to discuss the proposal.

“Simply put – there is no better location for the Canada Water Agency than Sault Ste. Marie,” said Mayor Matthew Shoemaker. “The City welcomes the opportunity and is ready to host the Canada Water Agency. We look forward to working with the Government of Canada to advance this project in Sault Ste. Marie, and I will continue to stridently advocate for Sault Ste. Marie to be the Canada Water Agency’s host city.”

On June 28, 2021, City Council approved the formation of a Task Force to explore this potential opportunity. The Task Force is comprised of City staff and external Stakeholders, including: Mayor Matthew Shoemaker, City Councillor Corey Gardi, Dr. Elaine Ho-Tassone (Project Coordinator with the Lake Huron Collaborative), Dr. Paula Antunes (Freshwater Researcher and Consultant) and Ryan Namespetra (Natural Environment Coordinator with Sault College).

“I want to recognize the efforts of my colleagues on the task force, who worked hard over the past year to help us develop a comprehensive case for locating the Canada Water Agency in Sault Ste. Marie,” said Councillor Corey Gardi.

“We all know that Sault Ste. Marie is the ideal location for the Canada Water Agency, and I’m confident the proposal communicates the many reasons why we are suited to host it.”
