Donations sought to support Every Breakfast Counts

The Every Breakfast Counts committee is seeking donations to support future operations ahead of the start of 2023 summer programming.
Every Breakfast Counts is a community-based initiative that ensures the continuation of meal programming over the summer months for youth who rely on these supports during the school year. It was launched in 2018 and has provided thousands of meals to local children over the past five summers.
As the price of fresh food continues to rise, the demand has increased along with it. As such, donations are being sought to support future operations. Donations can be made online through the Algoma Family Services Foundation at:

“Every Breakfast Counts is a tremendous example of the power of community-based programming, and I’m committed to leading our efforts to raise the support needed to ensure its continued operation,” said Mayor Matthew Shoemaker.
“I know Sault Ste. Marie is a generous community, and I’m confident that generosity will be extended to Every Breakfast Counts once again.”
2023 programming will begin in July and will run for eight weeks. Food items (including fresh fruit/vegetables, milk, cheese and bread) will be distributed free of charge in conjunction with the Kids Being Kids program offered by the District of Sault Ste. Marie Social Services, the EarlyON Child and Family Centres, the Indigenous Friendship Center and at City outdoor pool locations. Last summer, 1,600 lunches per week – for a total of 12,800 meals – were provided to local children.
“Healthy eating habits have a significant impact on the achievement of optimal health, growth and intellectual development for youth, and the program is essential for ensuring consistent access to nutritious food,” said Emily Tremblay, Community Services Supervisor, Algoma Family Services.
“Sault Ste. Marie has been incredibly supportive of our efforts, and the continued support of the community will ensure we continue to reach thousands of local children.”
The committee is comprised of representation from the City of Sault Ste. Marie, Mayor and CAO Offices, District of Sault Ste. Marie Social Services, United Way Harvest Algoma, Algoma Family Services, Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre, Indigenous Friendship Centre, Child Care Algoma and EarlyON Child and Family Centre.
