On September 29, 2025, the City of Sault Ste. Marie will permanently raise the Every Child Matters flag in its Gallery of Flags, a lasting commitment to truth, reconciliation, and healing.
The flag will be installed alongside the flags of Batchewana First Nation, Garden River First Nation, and the Métis Nation, symbolizing unity and the contributions of Indigenous communities to the region.
The occasion will be marked with a small ceremony, including a prayer and smudge, where community members, Indigenous partners, and local leaders will come together in reflection and solidarity.
“The Every Child Matters flag serves as more than a symbol. It is a reminder of the intergenerational impacts of residential schools, the ongoing journey of healing, and the City’s responsibility to foster understanding, trust, and respect with Indigenous Peoples,” said Kaitlyn Neveu. Anishnaabe E-Wiidookaaged, Indigenous Policy and Process Renewal Advisor.
This initiative underscores the City’s commitment to meaningful reconciliation, honouring survivors and building relationships rooted in truth, respect, and mutual understanding.
