Outdoor pools, splash pads and fields closed

Wildfire Smoke Update

Due to poor air quality conditions caused by wildfire smoke, the City of Sault Ste. Marie is closing all City-operated outdoor pools and splash pads for today. The Downtown Plaza will also be closed to the public.

In addition, all outdoor sporting events scheduled at City-operated facilities have been cancelled. This includes any bookings or outdoor City-run programming activities and games at Elliott Sports Complex and Strathclair Park.

These precautionary measures have been taken to protect the health and safety of residents, participants, volunteers, and staff. Poor air quality can pose health risks, particularly for children, older adults, and individuals with heart or lung conditions.

Residents are encouraged to limit or reschedule outdoor activity, especially strenuous exercise, until the air quality improves. Those experiencing symptoms such as coughing, difficulty breathing, or irritation of the eyes or throat should move indoors and seek medical advice from a health care provider if symptoms persist.

The City will continue to monitor air quality conditions and provide updates regarding the status of outdoor recreational facilities as conditions change.

For updates, residents are encouraged to visit the City’s website and official social media channels. For more information on air quality and health during wildfire smoke, follow Algoma Public Health recommendations.
