Nominations for City Council and School Board Trustees for this fall’s municipal election open on Friday, May 1 at 8:30 a.m. The last day to file a nomination is August 21, 2026, by 2 p.m.

The 2026 municipal election takes place on Monday, October 26. The City of Sault Ste. Marie will elect one Mayor, and 10 Councillors. In addition, voters will elect school board trustees for English and French boards.

A person may be nominated for office if they:

(a) reside in the City of Sault Ste. Marie (or is the owner or tenant of land or the spouse of an owner or tenant)

(b) are a Canadian citizen;

(c) are at least 18 years old; and

(d) are not legally prohibited from voting; and

(e) are not disqualified by any legislation from holding municipal office.

Before incurring any expenses or collecting any money, candidates must file a nomination form along with the filing fee with the City Clerk. Candidates for City Council will also require 25 endorsement signatures from eligible electors. Forms are available on the City’s election webpage at www.saultstemarie.ca/election2026.

Nomination forms must be signed by the candidate and filed in person or by an agent (no email or fax) with the City Clerk.

Two pieces of identification must be presented showing name, qualifying address, and signature.

Filing fees are $200 for Mayor and $100 for all other offices (cash, debit, or certified cheque).

Appointments to complete the nomination filing process are recommended to ensure the availability of the City Clerk. Appointments may be made by calling 705-759-5388 or emailing cityclerk@cityssm.on.ca.
