November 30 Significant Weather Event Update
Saturday, November 30, 2024
The City of Sault Ste. Marie continues to experience a significant weather event with hazardous snow squalls in the area. Environment Canada has issued a snow squall warning for Sault Ste. Marie, with additional snowfall accumulations exceeding 50 cm and snowfall rates of 5 to 10 cm per hour. Updates regarding municipal services and operations are as follows:
-
Road Clearing Efforts: Crews continue to prioritize main and collector roads, followed by residential streets. At this point, given the ongoing snowfall, crews have not been able to reach all residential streets. All available staff and equipment are deployed and will operate around the clock to manage snow accumulation and ice formation. Anyone travelling on City streets should proceed with caution. Residential areas and designated sidewalks will continue to be cleared throughout the day. Sidewalks should not be blocked at any time to facilitate snow removal. Vehicles are asked not to park on the road during a winter event, as this can cause delays during snow removal.
-
Travel Advisory: Motorists are reminded to drive according to the conditions and to give snow plow operators room to clear routes safely.
-
Transit Service: Sault Transit and Parabus services will resume today at 6:15 a.m. Routes may continue to experience delays, and Parabus service may have difficulties accessing unplowed parking lots. Please remain patient.
-
Waste Collection: Reminder that yesterday’s garbage and recycling collection is postponed to next Friday. Residents affected by the delay may place additional bags for collection next week. Please remove bins from the curb to assist in snow removal efforts.
-
Landfill Closure: The City landfill is closed today.
-
Community Centres: All City-operated community centres are open, and regular programming resumed.
The City thanks the community for their patience and cooperation during this challenging weather event. Continued caution is recommended for residents given the ongoing snowfall and forecast for additional accumulation. Please visit the City’s website or follow its social media channels for the latest updates.
