Mayor Provenzano statement on Algoma Steel investment into electric arc steelmaking
Friday, November 12, 2021
Mayor Christian Provenzano offers the following statement on Algoma Steel’s commitment to transition to electric arc steelmaking:
“This decision is great news for the health and economic stability of our community. This incredible investment will ensure that Algoma has a bright and sustainable future making steel in Sault Ste. Marie for decades. The transformation of its technological operations will help Algoma cut greenhouse gas emissions by three million tonnes annually, making it one of the highest impact projects of its kind in Canada, and it will reduce its direct environmental impact on our own community.
I would like to recognize and thank the Federal Government, the Canada Infrastructure Bank, Province of Ontario, Algoma’s Board of Directors, CEO Michael McQuade, the executive leadership team and management for working together to make this important project a reality.
It is also important to recognize that PUC Services Inc. will play a significant role in this project in the construction of transmission facilities creating a return and value for the City of Sault Ste. Marie and our residents. It is great to see two of our community’s largest employers work together on a development that will strengthen our economy, create value for our community and reduce carbon emissions.”
