As part of the Sault Canal National Historic Site of Parks Canada, the City of Sault Ste. Marie operates and maintains the Recreational Lock through a contractual agreement with the Federal government.
In 1995, the City of Sault Ste. Marie and Parks Canada entered into a collaborative agreement to operate and maintain the new recreational lock at the Sault Ste. Marie Canal National Historic Site of Canada. Over the years a strong partnership has developed between our two organizations as we work cooperatively to maintain this important community and national asset.
The National Historic Site with its recreational lock is a valuable part of the city’s waterfront and an important cultural link to the historic fabric of the the community.
The lock is 77 metres long (250 feet) by 15.4 metres wide (50 feet) with a minimum 3 metres draft (9.8 feet).
