The City of Sault Ste. Marie is developing a Community Climate Change Adaptation Plan (CCCAP).
The Plan will help the City better understand local climate-related risks and identify practical actions that can reduce impacts and strengthen community resilience over time.
A changing climate will impact our homes, infrastructure, services, natural spaces, health and day-to-day activities. Extreme rainfall, flooding, heat waves, severe storms, wildfire smoke, drought, freezing rain and heavy snowfall can all create challenges for residents, businesses and City services.
Have your say
The City is asking residents to share how weather events and changing climate conditions have affected their neighbourhoods, families, workplaces and community activities. Your feedback will help identify local vulnerabilities, understand the consequences of climate events, and inform priorities for the CCAP.
A public survey is open from August 31 to October 2, 2026. The survey should take approximately 5 minutes or less to complete and can be completed below.
We want to hear about
- Places in the community where you have seen impacts from weather events, including streets, parks, shorelines, buildings or other facilities;
- Weather events that have affected you or your community, such as flooding from heavy rain, storm damage, extreme heat, poor air quality from wildfire smoke, winter hazards or warmer winters that affect recreation; and
- Actions the City and community could take to prepare for, respond to and recover from climate-related impacts.
Upcoming in-person community engagement
The City will also host an in-person opportunity for residents to learn more about the project and share their ideas for climate resilience in late fall 2026. Additional details will be posted on this page when confirmed.
How your input will be used
Survey responses and feedback received through partner engagement will help inform the City’s climate change risk assessment and the development of recommended adaptation actions. A summary of what we hear will be prepared as part of the planning process.
The City’s engagement process includes surveys, discussions with community partners and interested First Nations and Métis communities, City staff workshops, and in-person community engagement. The Plan is intended to identify practical measures that can be integrated into municipal planning and decision-making over time.
