Thursday, February 12, 2015

The thoughts and prayers of Mayor Christian Provenzano, members of City Council, and Sault Ste. Marie residents are with the family and friends of former Mayor James McIntyre who died yesterday as a result of an accident.

"I am very saddened by the news of Mayor McIntyre's passing. I am very privileged to have known him personally. He was a kind man who cared deeply about our community," said Mayor Christian Provenzano. "We are grateful for Mayor McIntyre's long and tremendous legacy of service to Sault Ste. Marie. We can look to that legacy and hold it out as a fine example of citizenship to which we can aspire. We thank his family for the sacrifices they would have made while he committed so much of his time and energy to the community and want them to know that our thoughts are with them at this very difficult and challenging time."

James McIntyre served as a City Alderman from 1958-59 and Mayor from 1960-64. During his working years, he was involved on various city boards and committees including the Police Services Board and Sault Ste. Marie Conservation Authority. Most notable was his 53-year commitment to the International Bridge Authority. He received the Medal of Merit Award in 1988 in recognition of his outstanding contributions to Sault Ste. Marie.

Flags will be flown at half-mast at City facilities until the day of his funeral as a sign of respect to former Mayor James L. McIntyre.
