Ways to Vote

For the 2026 Municipal Election the City of Sault Ste. Marie wants to help you make your plan to vote.

The City of Sault Ste. Marie has 5 wards, with two councillors representing each ward. During the Municipal Election, voters have the choice to vote for (1) one mayor and up to (2) councillors per ward, and designated school board trustee(s).

Advance Vote Days

Advance Voting will take place at Bay Street Active Living Centre 55+, located at 619 Bay St, Sault Ste. Marie, ON P6A 0A2

Dates

Wednesday October 7 – noon to 7 p.m.

Saturday October 10 – 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Wednesday October 14 – noon to 7 p.m.

Saturday October 17 – 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

An elector who is not able to attend an in-person paper ballot voting location may appoint another qualified elector within the municipality as a voting proxy (a “Proxy”) to cast a paper ballot on their behalf at an in-person voting location. The appointed Proxy must present a completed form “Appointment of Voting Proxy” in person, to an Election Official in the City Clerk’s office, during regular business hours at the Ronald A. Irwin Civic Centre.

In addition to the completed form, the appointed Proxy must provide a certified copy or original piece of identification (as prescribed) for both the person appointing the Proxy and for the person who is appointed to act as a Proxy. Only forms that have been stamped and certified by the Clerk or their designate will be accepted by voting location Election Officials.

Prior to casting a paper ballot, the appointed Proxy must take the prescribed oath. Under Section 44 of the Municipal Elections Act, 1996, a qualified elector within the municipality may act as a voting Proxy on behalf of one other qualified elector who is not a relative. However, a qualified elector within the municipality may act as a Proxy for one or more qualified electors who are relatives (i.e.: spouse, sibling, parent, child, grandparent) and must use a separate proxy form for each voter that they are representing.

The period to apply to vote by special mail-in ballot for the 2026 Municipal Election will be open in the fall.

More information regarding the Vote-by-Mail process will be provided closer to application date.

If there are barriers preventing an elector from voting at an Advance Vote Day or on Voting Day, electors may register for a home visit to cast a ballot.

During the Vote from Home program, an election team will visit a registered residence to provide a ballot. The ballot is marked in the same way as if it were at a regular poll. An envelope system is in place to protect the secrecy of the vote. The ballot is placed in a sealed ballot box to be counted after the polls close on Voting Day.

A Vote from Home application form will become available in the fall. Once the application has been reviewed and accepted, a member of the elections team will contact the elector to schedule a home visit. Home visit voting will begin the week of October 5. Home visit voting is not available on Voting Day.

Voting will take place on Monday October 26, 2026 across the five wards in the Municipality of Sault Ste. Marie between 10 a.m. – 8 p.m.

Voters will receive Voter Notification Cards in the mail early October to direct them to the proper voting location. If voters need assistance on locating their voting location, they can contact the Election office at 705.759.5752 or by emailing election@cityssm.on.ca.
