Our People

Baawaating – Place of the Rapids

The First Nations, Métis, and Inuit communities in and around Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, play a vital role in the cultural and historical fabric of the region. The Batchewana and Garden River First Nations are Anishinaabe communities with deep-rooted connections to the land, water, and traditions of the area. Alongside them, the Métis Nation of Ontario maintains a strong presence, reflecting the unique heritage of Métis people as descendants of First Nations and European settlers.  While the Inuit population in the region is smaller, their presence contributes to the diversity and richness of Indigenous life in Northern Ontario. Together, these communities are central to preserving Indigenous knowledge, advancing reconciliation, and fostering a more inclusive and respectful future for all.
