The City of Sault Ste. Marie has declared a significant weather event due to a winter weather hazard. Environment Canada has issued a hazardous snow squall warning beginning Saturday night into Sunday morning. Snowfall amounts of 20 to 35 cm and higher are possible with significantly reduced visibility in areas with heavy snow and blowing snow. Travel will be hazardous, and roads and walkways will be difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow.
The declaration of a significant weather event does not mean roads are closed or that service levels have changed. It is intended to notify the public that caution must be observed when travelling on city-maintained roads. Restoring the roads to optimal conditions may take longer than usual. Public Works monitors the weather and patrols the roadways to deploy all available crews to address snow and ice accumulation. During a significant event, all roads and sidewalks maintained by the city are considered to be in a “state of repair.”
Motorists should drive according to the conditions and allow space for heavy equipment operators to clear and sand roadways safely and efficiently. The parking by-law remains in effect, with motorists not permitted to park on city streets between midnight and 6 a.m. during the winter months. However, during a winter event, motorists should not park on city streets or impede sidewalks during the day to assist in the efficiency of snow removal.
Transit Services reminds customers that there may be delays due to adverse conditions.
Updates will be posted as required on the City’s website and social media sites. Thank you for your cooperation.
