The Rainbow Bridge installation is inspired by the well-known poem Rainbow Bridge by Edna Clyne-Rekhy, which speaks to the bond between humans and their animal companions. The memorial features a 10-foot rainbow arch mounted on a concrete platform, accompanied by a plaque inscribed with the poem. Designed as a place of reflection and remembrance, the bridge offers a tranquil space where pet owners can honour the lives of their departed companions. A distinctive feature of the bridge is the wire mesh along the structure, which allows visitors to affix pet tags as a personal tribute to their pets.
“Pet and pet owners are some of the most avid users of our City’s outdoor amenities and walking trails, and this structure stands as a symbol of the meaningful connection between people and their pets,” said Councillor Caputo, who introduced the motion to support the initiative. “The memorial provides a space for reflection and healing, and a lasting tribute to the unconditional love that animals bring to our lives.”
The event will feature local musician Luke Prov, who will perform his original song, “Rainbow Bridge.” All members of the community, including leashed pets, are welcome to attend.
