International urbanist Brent Toderian to share sustainable urban development best practices

The City of Sault Ste. Marie's Environmental Sustainability Committee, in partnership with the City’s Planning Department are pleased to announce that Brent Toderian, international planning consultant and Laura Flaherty, City of Kingston’s Project Manager will host a free sustainability spotlight webinar. The virtual presentation is scheduled for Thursday September 8, 2022, from 4 – 5 p.m. All are welcome to attend.   
 
“Cities are at the forefront of delivering community development solutions, and have the opportunity to be leaders on climate action,” said Emily Cormier, Sustainability Coordinator with the City of Sault Ste. Marie. “Learning best practices from other communities and industry experts can highlight new and innovative solutions on how to become a more sustainable and resilient community.” 
 
An international practitioner and thought leader on cities, Brent Toderian has over 30 years of experience in advanced urbanism, city planning, urban design, transportation and change management. Toderian advocates for creative, vibrant city buildings, including change making involving civic and organizational culture. Laura Flaherty is a project manager in Planning Services for the City of Kingston. Flaherty will speak to Kingston’s parking reform project and the critical role that parking and parking regulations play in the success or failure of vital public interest goals. These goals include climate change and pollution mitigation, improved affordability, better social equity, lower public infrastructure costs, a healthier post-pandemic economic recovery and more inviting, healthy and sustainable choices around how we live and get around.

About Laura Flaherty: 
Laura Flaherty, MCIP, RPP is a project manager in Planning Services for the City of Kingston, co-author of “The Power of Parking” and was the lead on the City’s new zoning by-law project approved in April of 2022. With a background working for a development lawyer in Toronto before starting with the City of Kingston, Laura finds innovative and creative policy solutions to problems that require strategic thinking.
