Fire Prevention Week

2023 Fire Prevention Week

October 8 to 14

Join your Sault Ste. Marie Fire Services in celebrating Fire Prevention Week™ (FPW). This year's Fire Prevention Week™ (FPW™) campaign, “Cooking safety starts with YOU. Pay attention to fire prevention™,” works to educate everyone about simple but important actions they can take to keep themselves and those around them safer when cooking.
Ensure your household develops and practices a home fire escape plan. You may have as little as two minutes, or even less time, to safely escape a home fire from the time the smoke alarm sounds. Your ability to get out of a home during a fire depends on early warning from smoke alarms and advance planning.

“Cook with Caution”

• Be on alert! If you are sleepy or have consumed alcohol don’t use the stove or stovetop.
•  Stay in the kitchen while you are frying, boiling, grilling, or broiling food. If you leave the kitchen for even a short period of time, turn off the stove.
•  If you are simmering, baking, or roasting food, check it regularly, remain in the home while food is cooking, and use a timer to remind you that you are cooking.
•  Keep anything that can catch fire — oven mitts, wooden utensils, food packaging, towels or curtains — away from your stovetop. if you have a small (grease) cooking fire and decide to fight the fire...
• On the stovetop, smother the flames by sliding a lid over the pan and turning off the burner. Leave the pan covered until it is completely cooled.
•  For an oven fire, turn off the heat and keep the door closed. if you have any doubt about fighting a small fire…
• Just get out! When you leave, close the door behind you to help contain the fire.
•  Call 9-1-1 or the local emergency number from outside the home.

Importance of fire prevention

In a fire, mere seconds can mean the difference between a safe escape and a tragedy. Fire safety education isn’t just for children. Teenagers, adults, and the elderly are also at risk in fires, making it important for every member of the community to take some time every October during Fire Prevention Week to make sure they understand how to stay safe in case of a fire.

Smoke Alarms

Smoke alarms sense smoke well before you can, alerting you to danger. Smoke alarms need to be in every bedroom, outside of the sleeping areas (like a hallway), and on each level (including the basement) of your home. Do not put smoke alarms in your kitchen or bathrooms.

Ensure you are checking the date of manufacture on the back of your alarms. Smoke alarms must be replaced 10 years after the date of manufacture, at the latest! When inspecting your alarm, ensure that it is listed with a testing laboratory, meaning it has met certain standards for protection (CSA, ULC, etc.).

Change the batteries in your alarm at least once a year, and test them every month by pushing the test button. Working smoke alarms save lives!
