NOHFC Film and Television Industry Projects

The objective of the Film and Television Industry Projects stream is to increase film and television industry jobs and investment in Northern Ontario, increase the number of high quality, original film and television productions produced in Northern Ontario and to effect the establishment of infrastructure to grow and support the industry. NOHFC provides assistance in the form of a conditional grant up to 50% of eligible costs to a maximum of $500,000. NOHFC funding is based on the project’s level of spending in Northern Ontario and on employment and training opportunities for Northern Ontario residents. NOHFC Northern Business Expansion Projects

NOHFC assists existing businesses in Ontario that intend to expand and or retain their operations within Northern Ontario to improve competitiveness, increase productivity, export, grow revenues and create jobs.

NOHFC assistance will generally not exceed 50% of total eligible project costs up to a maximum of $1 million per project. In exceptional circumstances, the NOHFC may consider exceeding the $1 million maximum on a case-by-case basis.

NOHFC assistance under this program can be provided through three funding options:

  • Funding in the form of a conditional grant only to a maximum of 20% of total eligible costs OR $400,000, whichever is less.
  • Funding in the form of a conditional grant to a maximum of 20% of total eligible costs OR $400,000, whichever is less, plus a repayable loan to a maximum of 30% of total eligible costs OR $600,000, whichever is less.
  • Funding in the form of repayable loan only to a maximum of 50% of total eligible costs OR $1,000,000, whichever is less.

MFM – Cultural Industries Ontario North Media Arts Production: Practiced, Employed, Developed (MAPPED) Funding

The Media Arts Production: Practiced, Employed, Developed (MAPPED) Program has launched a new intake round. Film and television producers are invited to apply for this funding opportunity if planning to film in Northern Ontario. Funding through FedNor, MAPPED is a production assistance fund, designed to allow film and television producers provide on the job training to Northern Ontario residents looking to work in the industry. The program can provide up to $10,000 to fund 25% of the wages for emerging crew looking to build their career in the film and television industry in the north. Ontario Film and Television Tax Credit

The OFTTC is generally calculated as 35% of the eligible Ontario labour expenditures incurred by a qualifying production company with respect to an eligible Ontario production. Productions that are shot in Ontario entirely outside of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) can receive a 10% bonus on all Ontario labour expenditures incurred for the production. This credit will usually be combined with the federal Canadian Film or Video Production Tax Credit of 25% of qualified labour expenditures. Ontario Production Services Tax Credit

A refundable tax credit available to eligible Ontario-based Canadian and foreign-controlled corporations of 21.5% of qualified Ontario production expenditures for eligible film and television productions. This credit will usually be combined with the federal Film or Video Production Services Tax Credit of 16% of qualified Canadian labour expenditures. Ontario Computer Animation and Special Effects Tax Credit

A refundable tax credit available to Ontario-based Canadian and foreign-controlled corporations of 18% of qualifying Ontario labour expenditures for digital animation and digital visual effects created in Ontario for film and television productions. This credit may be claimed on eligible expenditures in addition to the Ontario Film and Television Tax Credit or the Ontario Production Services Tax Credit. Ontario Interactive Digital Media Tax Credit

The Ontario Interactive Digital Media Tax Credit (OIDMTC) is a refundable tax credit based on eligible Ontario labour expenditures and eligible marketing and distribution expenses claimed by a qualifying corporation with respect to interactive digital media products. The OIDMTC is calculated as 40% of eligible Ontario labour expenditures and eligible marketing and distribution expenses incurred by qualifying corporations, regardless of size of corporation, to create “non-specified” interactive digital media products in Ontario.
