Downtown Urban Design

Urban design is the process of designing and shaping the physical features of a city. It is a blend of architecture and city planning that involves the arrangement and design of buildings, public spaces, transportation systems, services, and amenities. Urban design has the potential to greatly enhance the appeal, functionality, and quality of neighbourhoods by guiding private development and public projects.

The City of Sault Ste. Marie has prepared design guides for downtown commercial façades and streetscapes. The outlined design objectives and guidelines provide general guidance on improvements, and to date, we have seen momentum build to enhance the safety, attractiveness, accessibility, and sustainability of our Downtown, while still preserving the area's existing character.

Guidelines prepared thus far include:

  • Downtown Commercial Façade Guidelines
    • Every building and facade is different, yet a closer inspection reveals a common design language. This guideline has been developed to be a helpful basic source of information on facade design practices.
More guidelines will be posted here shortly.
