COVID-19: City Services and Facilities

Effective March 1, 2022, The City of Sault Ste. Marie joins the Province of Ontario in easing further COVID restrictions in alignment with new public health measures. Indoor capacity limits will be lifted and visitors entering City facilities will no longer require Proof of Vaccination. 


  • Indoor spectator areas of facilities used for sports and recreational fitness activities (such as sporting events) and concert venues can operate at usual seating capacity.
  • Arenas, community centres and museums are open. This includes the Northern Community Centre, Seniors Centres (Drop In and Northern Community Centre Seniors 55+), W.J. McMeeken Centre, John Rhodes Community Centre and pool and the Ermatinger Clergue National Historic Site. 
  • There is no impact to outdoor recreation amenities.

Administrative Offices

  • The Cemetery office, GFL Memorial Gardens, Ronald A. Irwin Civic Centre, Sault Transit, Fire Services Administration and Engineering Services offices are open. Citizens requiring the attention of staff are advised to contact the appropriate department.

Building Services

  • Building Services continues to receive, review and issue all building permits but inspections will only be carried out on projects deemed essential under provincial restrictions put in place.
  • Building and by-law inquires and service requests can be submitted by phone to 705-759-5410 or online at building@cityssm.on.ca.   

Cemetery Office

  • The Cemetery office is open for essential needs only.
  • Funeral directors, families in need and delivery services will be accepted.
  • The chapel remains closed at this time. 

City Clerk

  • The City’s Clerks department is open
  • Cemetery and funeral services and urgent marriage licence for Algoma District residents applications will be processed.

Economic Development and Tourism

Paym‚Äčent Options

Property taxes can be paid using any of the following methods:
  • At most financial institutions.
  • By credit card: paysimply.ca/Partner/Details.aspx?id=23237. You will be leaving the City of Sault Ste. Marie’s website. The link will direct you to a third party site, PaySimply. You are bound by the terms and conditions of use of PaySimply’s  service and will be charged a 2.5% service fee which will be directed to PaySimply. If you have any further questions, please contact PaySimply directly.
  • By mail to the: Central Collections, 99 Foster Drive, Sault Ste. Marie, ON P6A 5X6.
  • By using the outside drop-off box located near the west entrance of the Civic Centre front steps or the inside drop-off box located in the Civic Centre lobby. (cheques only, no cash).
  • By telephone or online banking through most financial institutions. Contact your financial institution for details.
  • By choosing one of our pre-authorized tax payment plans:
  • Ten Month Automatic Bank Withdrawals – payments are withdrawn from your bank account on the 5th of each month (January to October).
  • Due Date Tax Payment Plan – payments are withdrawn from your bank account on due dates.

Fire Services

Administration will be available by phone at 705-949-3333 Press #0.

Legal Department and POA

  • The Legal department and Provincial Offences office are open for essential needs only.
  • Fine payments can be made by mail, in the drop box located at the Civic Centre or online at saultstemarie.ca/eservices. Payments cannot be made over the phone.
  • Damage claims can be completed online.
  • All Freedom of Information requests with the accompanying $5 can be mailed to the Legal Department for processing.
  • Provincial Offences Court continues to operate.
  • The City's Legal department is working remotely and will respond to messages as soon as possible. For further inquiries regarding the services of the City’s Legal department contact 705-759-5400.

Beginning Monday, January 31, 2022, the ticketing of parking violations and infractions will resume.

Planning Services

Applications for planning approvals including Committee of Adjustment matters can be submitted either electronically or by mail. Staff are available by both phone (general inquiry line: 705-759-5368) and email (general department inbox: planning@cityssm.on.ca) to provide further information.

Public Works

  • There is no impact to waste and recycling collection.
  • There is no impact to winter operations.
  • The City’s landfill located at 402 Fifth Line East is open Monday to Friday 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Expect vehicle lineups as space at drop-off bins is being limited.


The City is implementing alternative methods to respond to Requests for Quotations, Requests for Tenders, and Requests for Proposals. Electronic submissions of bids and proposals are strongly encouraged. Details will appear in new documents as they are issued, and in the form of addenda for procurements presently open for submission. For the time being, Public Openings of Tenders will be suspended.

All City facilities continue to operate under strict health and safety measures which must be adhered to by residents to limit the spread of COVID-19 and for the safety of facility patrons and City staff. Due to the rapidly changing nature of the pandemic, services are subject to ongoing assessment and potential change.


  • There will be no change to the schedule during this time.
  • Enhanced cleaning and disinfection of buses remains in place with a focus on high touch areas.
