8,500 meals distributed through Every Breakfast Counts, 50/50 draw launched to support future operat

Monday, September 19, 2022

The Every Breakfast Counts committee is pleased to announce the results of 2022 programming. In total, approximately 8,500 meals were distributed this summer – free of charge – to local children. Over an eight week period from July to August, an average of 1,066 meals were provided; exceeding the target of 850 meals per week.

Nutritious food items (including fresh fruit/vegetables, milk, cheese and bread) were offered through the City of Sault Ste. Marie’s outdoor pools, Child Care Algoma EarlyON Child and Family Centre, Sault Ste. Marie District Social Services Community Hubs and the Indigenous Friendship Centre.

The committee wishes to recognize the outstanding efforts of the local volunteers who supported our efforts. Approximately 190 volunteer hours per week were required to pack and assemble meals at United Way Harvest Algoma, and volunteers from nine local organizations (Algoma Family Services, City of Sault Ste. Marie, Sault Ste. Marie Social Services, Children’s Aid Society, Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre, TD Bank, Sault Ste. Marie Police Services, Canadian Mental Health Association and John Howard Society) volunteered for delivery.

“The success of Every Breakfast Counts is a testament to the generosity and kindness of our community. Every Breakfast Counts has provided the expertise and infrastructure needed to provide assistance, but without the support of the community it wouldn’t be possible,” said Mayor Christian Provenzano.

To assist with future operations, the Every Breakfast Counts committee is launching a 50/50 draw with the chance to win up to $25,000. Tickets are $5 each and can be purchased by contacting the committee member organizations listed below. The draw date is October 28, 2022 at 1 p.m. at Harvest Algoma (446 Second Line East). The draw will be held by the Algoma Family Services Foundation.

“We’re excited to roll out a new initiative to raise support for Every Breakfast Counts,” said Emily Tremblay, Algoma Family Services Community Services Supervisor.

“The program continues to make a positive difference in the lives of hundreds of children in Sault Ste. Marie, and I encourage people to participate in the draw as a means to support our efforts and for the chance to win up to $25,000.”

Background

Ongoing coordination is facilitated by the Every Breakfast Counts committee, comprised of the City of Sault Ste. Marie, Mayor and CAO Offices, District of Sault Ste. Marie Social Services, United Way Harvest Algoma, Algoma Family Services, Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre, Indigenous Friendship Centre, Child Care Algoma and EarlyON Child and Family Centre.
