City and Garden River First Nation partner to deliver free energy literacy initiative

Energy affects everything we do from charging our phones to heating our homes. Understanding how energy works and how to manage it can save money and lower the world’s carbon footprint.
The City of Sault Ste. Marie and Garden River First Nation have partnered together to deliver a free four-part energy literacy webinar series. The webinars align with Garden River First Nation’s recently updated Indigenous Community Energy Plan and the City’s Community Greenhouse Gas Reduction Plan 2020 – 2030. Both plans prioritize residential and commercial energy efficiency and energy literacy.
The webinars are scheduled as follows:

Understanding Ontario’s Energy Sector – Presented by the Ontario Energy Board: Wednesday September 22, 2021 from 10 a.m. – 11a.m.

Home Energy Retrofit Orientation (HERO) – Presented by Humber College and Enbridge Gas: Wednesday October 13, 2021 from 5 p.m. – 7 p.m.

Residential Energy Efficiency Incentives – Presented by Enbridge and the IESO: Wednesday October 27, 2021 from 10 a.m. – 11 a.m.

Commercial Energy Incentives – Presented by Enbridge and the IESO: Wednesday November 10, 2021 from 10 a.m. – 11 a.m.
The online webinar series will cover a range of topics including understanding how Ontario’s Energy System works, providing an introduction to homeowners on home energy and how to manage it and information regarding energy efficiency programs and incentives.
“Retrofitting our homes and businesses is a key part of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and adapting our buildings to be more resilient to climate change,” said Emily Cormier, Sustainability Coordinator with the City of Sault Ste. Marie. “It is our hope that through the energy literacy webinars, community members in Sault Ste. Marie and Garden River First Nation will be encouraged to retrofit their homes and businesses”.

Marie on the energy literacy webinar series”, said Tricia Pine, Energy Advisor with Garden River First Nation. “Energy conservation has been a part of the Indigenous Community Energy Plan for Garden River, and education in our communities is a crucial part in the energy sector. There are a variety of energy efficiency and conservation programs and incentives available in Ontario for both residential and commercial buildings. We hope participants take advantage of these programs to reduce energy costs and fight climate change”.
