Preparing for winter

Friday, October 28, 2022

As residents prepare for winter, the City of Sault Ste. Marie provides the following reminders:

Staff are sweeping and cleaning basins and storm drains in preparation for the flow of water during the winter months. Residents should not rake leaves onto roadways or into ditches as they cause drains to plug resulting in flooding. Take caution when near drainage systems and ensure children and pets stay away from hazardous areas.

To avoid damage and assist in street cleaning, basketball nets must be removed from roadways.

The final weeks of leaf and yard waste collection will be November 14 for Route A and November 7 for Route B weather permitting on your garbage day. Leaf and yard waste should be bagged in compostable paper bags. The landfill also collects leaf and yard waste in compostable paper bags (user fees apply).

Under By-law 77-200-5(14), effective November 1 parking of vehicles on city streets is not permitted during the winter months between midnight and 6 a.m. Vehicles that remain parked on the street during an overnight parking restriction will receive a $40 fine and may have their vehicle towed at the owner’s expense. The By-law remains in effect from November 1 through to midnight April 30, even when there is no snow. Weather predictions change and when snow occurs, officers from the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service and Parking Enforcement Officers, will tag and tow cars to assist Public Works and Engineering Services with snow removal.

Garbage and recycling roll-out carts should not be put out the night before pick-up. Roll-out carts should be placed curbside by 7 a.m. the morning of scheduled pick-up to aid in winter operations.

The City of Sault Ste. Marie thanks residents for their cooperation in helping to keep our streets safe and clear this winter. For more information, contact Public Works and Engineering Services at 705.759.5201 or email pwt@cityssm.on.ca
