Creating in the Greyscale: Intellectual property mindfulness for creatives

Tuesday, October 5, 2021

Join us for this unique and FREE Creative Sector Zoom workshop and learn about the role and resources of CARFAC Ontario, basics of Intellectual Property rights, how to advocate for the value of your work and much more!

CARFAC Ontario, the Ontario Artists’ Legal Access & Support Network and the City of SSM, as part of the Summer Moon Festival, proudly present the Creating in the Greyscale: Intellectual Property Mindfulness for Creatives Zoom Workshop on Wednesday, October 13th, 2021 from noon to 2 pm.

For many creatives, Intellectual Property (IP) is often described as “a really uncomfortable thing”. It can be stressful, overwhelming, and every situation is unique. How can we unpack this discomfort to tackle difficult IP conversations with care and respect? How might personal contexts, interests, and values play a role in advocating for the value of your work?

Camila Salcedo and Macy Siu of CARFAC Ontario will guide you through the basics of IP in creative practice, the role of CARFAC as a resource and their work in advocating for artists, help think through scenarios with peers to learn from each others’ experiences, and begin generating a collective toolkit to embrace and navigate complexities in the greyscale.

In this workshop, you will:
  • Be introduced to CARFAC as an organization and its role in artist advocacy
  • Understand the basics of intellectual property rights in creative practice
  • Learn to advocate for the value of your work
  • Feel more prepared to tackle contracts, communicate expectations, and have difficult conversations around needs and wants for your practice
About the presenters:

Camila Salcedo, Outreach Coordinator, CARFAC Ontario is an interdisciplinary artist, independent curator, community organizer, and arts educator currently based in Toronto. She has worked with artists in various communities, including youth, immigrants and emerging artists, via programming associated with artist-run centres, galleries, festivals and other independent projects. At CARFAC Ontario, she will provide artists with non-legal peer-support from a place of care, and strive to implement outreach strategies that make legal information and services accessible to artists all over Ontario.

Macy Siu is an artist and foresight strategist who is driven by expression and empowerment tied to the hyphen of in-between spaces. Her practice focuses on creating evidence-based speculative futures, soundscapes, and artifacts to imagine and drive conversations around possible inclusive futures.
