Wind and Rain Event Update

Thursday, October 4, 2018

Sault Ste. Marie remains under a wind warning from Environment Canada with peak winds of 90 to 100km/h still expected this morning. Due to the forecasted storm throughout the night there is significant debris around the city including downed trees and power lines. Please use caution on your morning commute.

Downed powerlines may be live. Stay back at least 10 metres or 33 feet (the length of a school bus). Electricity can travel through water and the ground around powerlines. If you see a downed power line immediately call 9-1-1 and PUC 705-759-6555.

With the significant rain over night, a number of streets remain closed due to flooding. These streets are:

  • Goetz Street
  • Metzger Road
  • Bonney Street
  • Central Street
PUC and Public Works continue to work to address the storm damage. To report a power outage please call PUC at 705-759-6500. A request for service from Public Works can be made online through the City’s website at saultstemarie.ca or by calling 705-759-5201.

The City of Sault Ste. Marie thanks residents for their patience and cooperation in helping to keep our streets safe and clear. Further updates will be provided as required.

UPDATE - October 4, 2018 8:52 a.m.
Goetz Street, Metzger Road, Bonnie Street, and Central Street are now all passable and the road closure has ended.
