November 30, 2024 - Evening Update:
The City of Sault Ste. Marie continues to experience a significant weather event, with roads and sidewalks in a state of repair. Environment Canada has issued a snow squall warning for Sault Ste. Marie, peak snowfall rates of 5 to 10 cm per hour after recent snowfall accumulations have exceeded 50 cm. Updates regarding municipal services and operations for the evening of November 30, 2024, are as follows:
Road Clearing Efforts: Public Works crews continue to work around the clock to respond to the significant weather event. Currently, all roads are passable, but with reduced lane widths and snowpack on most streets.
Crews will begin widening the lanes and addressing snow and ice buildup. These activities will likely cause above-average snow and ice buildup at the end of driveways. This work is essential in preparing roads for the remainder of the winter season. Once the arterial roadways are completed, cutting will continue onto the collector and residential streets.
Residents are reminded that the snow plowed to the end of their driveway during a significant snow event is their responsibility and may be more than usual.
Currently, all available staff and equipment are deployed. Motorists should drive according to the road conditions and maintain a safe distance for heavy equipment operators to clear and sand roadways safely and efficiently.
Transit: Sault Transit and Parabus services have resumed today, but routes continue to experience delays, and Parabus service may have difficulties accessing unplowed parking lots. Please remain patient.
Garbage and Recycling: A reminder that yesterday’s garbage and recycling collection is postponed to next Friday. Residents affected by the delay may place additional bags for collection next week. Please remove bins from the curb to assist in snow removal efforts.
