Public Works and Engineering Services Winter reminders

Monday, November 16, 2020

The City’s Public Works and Engineering Services Department would like to provide the following winter reminders and messages.

  • Drive according to the conditions and give snow plow operators room to clear routes safely and efficiently.
  • Under By-law 77-200-5(14), parking of vehicles on city streets is not permitted between midnight and 6 a.m. from November 1, 2020 to April 30, 2021 even when there is no snow. Vehicles that remain parked on the street overnight will receive a $15 fine and have their vehicle towed at the owner’s expense. Weather predictions change and when snow occurs, officers from the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service and Special Constables from NORPRO tag and tow cars to assist crews with snow removal.
  • Sidewalks should not be blocked by parked vehicles at any time in order to facilitate snow removal and allow for usage by pedestrians.
  • Icy and snow conditions may require adjustments to driving when approaching the new pedestrian crossings. Failure to yield at a pedestrian crossover will be subject to a fine of up to $1000 and four demerit points. Fines will be doubled in community safety zones – near schools and public areas.
  • Snow plowed to the end of your driveway is your responsibility. Under By-law 2008-131 Section 9(k) residents must manage snow within their own properties and shall not move it across the street or other neighbouring properties.
  • To avoid damage and assist in street cleaning, basketball nets must be removed from roadways.
  • Do not place garbage and recycling carts out the night before collection. This causes issues with snow plowing and snow removal. Garbage and recycling carts should be placed curbside before 7 a.m. the morning of the designated collection day.
The City of Sault Ste. Marie thanks residents for their cooperation and working together to keep our roadways and designated sidewalks clear and safe this winter.
