Wednesday, November 6, 2019

The Cultural Advisory Board Community Recognition Award was awarded to the Algoma Art Society at this week's City Council meeting.

The annual award, presented by the City of Sault Ste. Marie upon recommendation of the Cultural Advisory Board, recognizes cultural contributions for activities considered to be particularly outstanding or innovative, or which have demonstrated long-term commitment to culture as defined in the City’s Cultural Policy.

As the oldest Visual Art Group in Sault Ste. Marie since its inception in 1948, the Algoma Art Society consists of visual artists working in Watercolours, Acrylics, Oils, Pastels, Yupo, Encaustics, Collage and Photography.

The non-profit organization aims to promote local exhibitions, competitions, workshops, classes and lectures. The Society also provides access to prominent artists, arranges annual sales of members’ work and supports, encourages and develops talent and ability of local artists by providing opportunities for them to become proficient in their field.

Over the years, many prominent artists have been associated with the Society including the Group of Seven and many Algoma Art Society members have traveled on outdoor excursions with F.H. Varley, A.J. Casson and A.Y. Jackson.

The City of Sault Ste. Marie congratulates the Algoma Art Society for their cultural achievements.
