Paramedics Helping the Hungry - November 29

Tuesday, November 18, 2014

City of Sault Ste. Marie Paramedics have once again organized the 'Paramedics Helping the Hungry' food drive taking place November 29, 2014 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Walmart store parking lot located on Great Northern Road.

The food drive is a volunteer initiative coordinated for the collection of non-perishable food items and monetary donations for the Soup Kitchen Community Center. Partner agencies for this event include the Soup Kitchen, Walmart Great Northern Road and Unifor Local 1359.

"As Paramedics we encounter people from all walks of life and often find ourselves dealing with people who have very little. The thought of not being able to provide the basic necessities for your loved ones is hard to imagine, but it is a reality we witness right here within our community," says Paramedic Brian Haines. "As Health Care professionals we recognize the importance of proper nutrition and fully support the Soup Kitchen and the other agencies within our city with the mandate to assist those less fortunate."

During the Christmas season the demand on the Soup Kitchen increases significantly. Families living at or below the poverty line are forced to depend on the Soup Kitchen for basics that most people take for granted.

Paramedics are relying on the kindness of Sault residents to give generously to surpass last year's contribution of 2000 lbs. of non-perishable food items and $3,156 in monetary donations.
