City turns Trash to Treasure on June 3

Friday, May 26, 2023

Are you searching for that special treasure? Do you want to get rid of items you no longer need? The City of Sault Ste. Marie’s Trash to Treasure Day is a great opportunity to exchange reusable household items, furniture, small appliances, toys and more for free. This year’s event takes place Saturday June 3, 2023, beginning at 8 a.m. All residents are invited to participate and share their Trash to Treasure photos and stories on social media using the hashtag #TrashtoTreasureSSM.

“We are excited to bring Trash to Treasure Day to our community,” said Spencer Lavergne, Supervisor of Waste Management. ”This event is a win-win for everyone involved. Residents get to clear out their clutter, while others in the community can find useful items for free. Rather than sending items to the landfill, Trash to Treasure promotes recycling and reducing waste to protect our environment and promote a more sustainable community.”

Trash to Treasures Day is open to all residents and there is no cost to participate. Participants are encouraged to place their items by the curb in front of their property by 8 a.m. June 3. All unclaimed items must be removed by 9 p.m. to ensure a safe and tidy community.

How it works:
  • Collect unwanted items and place them by the curb (but not in the street) where treasure hunters can access them without disrupting traffic.
  • Label items you wish to give away with a sign that reads "free" to let treasure hunters know that your items may be taken.
  • Keep items that are not giveaways (bikes, toys, and tools) away from the curb to prevent misunderstandings.
  • Tour your neighbourhood to see what treasures you can find at the curb.
  • Remove all uncollected items from the curb by 9 p.m. on Trash to Treasure Day. Items left at the curb are subject to enforcement as per City By-laws.
  • Do not offer unsafe items like baby cribs, walkers, items with sharp edges or household hazardous waste items.
  • If your treasures are not claimed by other treasure hunters, consider donating them to local agencies such as the Habitat for Humanity ReStore. Visit the Clean North website for a list of where to recycle and donate items.
Trash to Treasure is sponsored by GFL Environmental and Clean North. For more information about the event, including a list of acceptable items and safety guidelines, please visit saultstemarie.ca/trashtotreasure or contact Public Works at 705-759-5201.
