City receives electric ice resurfacing machine

Thursday, May 18, 2023

The City of Sault Ste. Marie has reached a major milestone with the introduction of its first electric ice resurfacing machine. This state-of-the-art vehicle marks a significant step towards reducing carbon emissions and promoting eco-friendly practices within the Northern Community Centre, the City’s newest sports and recreation complex.

“The new electric ice resurfacing machine aligns with the City’s commitment to becoming a greener and more sustainable community. By replacing the traditional gasoline-powered ice resurfacing machine with an electric model, the city aims to reduce air and noise pollution, improve energy efficiency, and enhance the overall ice maintenance process,” said Brent Lamming, Director, Community Services. “Embracing innovative technologies like an electric Zamboni, we are not only providing a better experience for our athletes but also actively contributing to a greener future.”

The electric ice resurfacing machine boasts several key features including advanced lithium-ion batteries to charge quickly between resurfacings and it operates silently, providing a more serene environment for ice sport enthusiasts. By reducing Green House Gas emissions, it improves air quality for both players and spectators, promoting a healthier and more enjoyable experience and provides cost savings opportunities from a fuel consumption and maintenance perspective.

The electric resurfacing machine will be deployed across the Northern Community Centre’s twin ice pads. The building also incorporates energy efficiency in its design using LED lighting and a heat recovery unit.

Sault Ste. Marie’s transition to an electric ice resurfacing machine reflects its commitment to sustainable practices and supports its overall Green House Gas reduction strategy.
