Community information session to discuss John Rowswell Hub Trail improvements

The City of Sault Ste. Marie is committed to creating recreational and active transportation networks that connect various neighbourhoods and destinations throughout the community. This summer, construction will begin on a section of the John Rowswell Hub Trail that will improve safety and create a consistent and comfortable experience for all ages and abilities when travelling along the 24-kilometer trail.
As part of the project, the City’s Planning Department will be hosting a public information session. The session will provide an opportunity to review construction plans and offer feedback on the design solutions:
When: Wednesday, June 1, 2022, from 3:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
Where: GFL Gardens, Bumbacco Room
WSP, a multi-discipline engineering and design firm was retained to assess the possible re-alignment of the Hub Trail in and around the Boardwalk area. The alignment project will start at the waterfront boardwalk, near the Fort Creek pedestrian bridge. A new section will travel along the west side of St. Mary’s River Drive, cross Bay Street, and continue along the west side of Andrew Street to Queen Street. The Queen Street trail will continue west to John Street where a new Pedestrian Cross Over (PXO) will be installed to facilitate crossing Queen Street. From there, the re-aligned section will connect to the existing Hub Trail system, on the north side of Queen Street.
All sections of the newly constructed trail will be located off-road, within the boulevard. The existing route utilizes a combination of the waterfront walkway, sidewalks, and on-road cycling between Canal Drive and Albert Street. The newly aligned trail will be consistent with the high standard in design implemented along other sections of the Hub Trail and represents best practice in bikeway and pedestrian facility design and safety.
