Do you want to be the Mayor for a day?
The City of Sault Ste. Marie is accepting submissions for the 2025 Mayor for a Day contest. Students are asked to submit a letter, video or any other creative piece that answers these questions:
-
Why would you like to be the Mayor for a day?
-
If you were the Mayor, what would you do?
-
What are the things you like most about Sault Ste. Marie?
“This contest has proven to be a great way to get young people interested in their municipal government,” said Mayor Matthew Shoemaker. “Introducing young community members to municipality helps them understand the structure and function of government, in turn developing a sense of civic duty and responsibility that will hopefully encourage them to be informed and active participants in our community as they grow.”
The deadline for submissions is June 19 and the winner will be announced (through the news media and the Mayor’s social media platforms) on June 20.
The winner will open the City Council meeting on June 23, and will also receive a pizza party for their class, a tour of the Civic Centre and a meeting with the Mayor.
Entries may be emailed to
mayorsoffice@cityssm.on.ca or mailed/delivered in person to the Civic Centre front reception at 99 Foster Drive. Participants may submit only one idea per entry, and the contest is open to Grade 5 and Grade 6 students.
