Ronald A. Irwin Civic Centre to re-open on Monday, June 29

Friday, June 26, 2020

The Ronald A. Irwin Civic Centre will re-open to the public on Monday June 29, 2020 with limited services available.

“We continue to monitor and respond to the COVID-19 situation while ensuring the delivery of City services that our residents count on,” says Malcolm White, CAO, City of Sault Ste. Marie. “We have had to find new and innovative ways to deliver as many municipal services as possible during this time. Our top priority is always the health, safety and well-being of our community and our employees.”

As the Civic Centre re-opens with limited services, visitors will notice a number of changes particularly regarding access points in the building. To protect staff, visitors are not permitted to access individual offices unless appointments have been made in advance. All interactions with City staff will take place in the lobby level or the Central Collections office. Plexiglas barriers and floor decals have been installed to assist with physical distancing and to protect visitors and employees. Those entering the building will be subject to increased screening measures and will be directed to use the hand sanitizer provided.

As the July 6th tax installment approaches, those that prefer to make a payment in person at the Central Collections office are welcome to do so. Taxpayers may also use one of the following non-contact payment methods:

  • Use the outside grey drop-off box located near the front steps of the Civic Centre (cheques only, no cash)
  • Mail cheques to: Central Collections, City of Sault Ste. Marie, 99 Foster Drive, Sault Ste. Marie, ON P6A 5X6
  • In person, by phone or online through most financial institutions.
  • Choose one of the pre-authorized tax payment plan options;
    • Ten-month automatic bank withdrawal where payments are withdrawn from your bank account on the fifth of each month (January to October).
    • A due date payment plan where payments are withdrawn from your bank account on the date taxes are due.

Members of the City’s Tax department are available to provide assistance throughout this process. If you have any questions, please call 705-759-5290.

“As we cautiously proceed through the Province’s Stage 2 re-opening directives, we thank the community for their patience and support. Looking ahead to Stage 3, it is our plan to open more facilities in near the future,” adds White.

The Ronald A. Irwin Civic Centre is open Monday to Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4: 30 p.m. For the latest updates on City services and facilities affected by COVID-19 visit  The City thanks citizens for their cooperation during this time.
