Canada Day schedule for City facilities and services

The City of Sault Ste. Marie reminds citizens of the following service interruptions on Canada Day – Wednesday, July 1:

Ronald A. Irwin Civic Centre

The Ronald A. Irwin Civic Centre will be closed on July 1 and will re-open to the public on July 2 with limited services available. Review the City’s website at saultstemarie.ca/covid19 for current information and services offered during this time.

Garbage and Recycling Collection

There is no garbage, leaf and yard waste or recycling pickup on Wednesday, July 1. Collection will be one day late following the holiday.

Leaf and Yard Waste is collected on your scheduled garbage day bi-weekly. To view the Leaf and Yard Waste collection calendar and see which week your leaf and yard waste collection will be, visit saultstemarie.ca/leafyardwaste.

The City’s landfill will be closed on Canada Day. Regular hours are Monday to Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The landfill will open on Saturdays beginning July 18. Expect delays as security is enforcing physical distancing and health and safety measures.

The Household Hazardous Waste Depot will open on July 13.

Transit Service 

Transit will not operate Wednesday, July 1. The essential service weekend schedule for transit will resume operations on Thursday, July 2. Parabus service will operate on July 1. Transit Services continues to limit the amount of passengers per bus to ensure physical distancing. For transit information, call 705-759-5438.

Marine Facilities

The Bellevue Marina is open Monday to Thursday 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Friday to Sunday 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. 

The Roberta Bondar Transient Marina is open Wednesday to Sunday 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Playgrounds and Recreational Facilities

The City’s playgrounds and recreational facilities remain closed. The following facilities are open for use:

  • Tennis courts (at the following parks – Birchwood, Boston, LaSalle, Manzo, McMeeken, North St., Penhorwood, Snowdon, Sutton and William Merrifield)
  • Dog Park (Strathclair Park)
  • Pickleball (at the following parks – LaSalle, McMeeken, Snowdon and William Merrifield)
  • Disc Golf Course (Penhorwood Park)
  • Pump Track (Esposito Park)
  • Skateboard track (Queen Elizabeth Park)

Refer to on-site signage, practice physical distancing and health and safety protocols. 

Canada Day Festivities

Following public health guidelines and the Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act pertaining to COVID-19, the City of Sault Ste. Marie has canceled its outdoor Canada Day events, including its fireworks display. Citizens are encouraged to decorate their homes and businesses for Canada Day and submit photos to the City’s Facebook page using #SaultCelebratesCanadaDay. Canadians can also enjoy virtual celebrations on the Department of Canadian Heritage web and social media sites.  The City has also introduced a month long Scavenger Hunt along the John Rowswell Hub Trail. Participants will have a chance to win prizes.
