Short-term rental applications now available

Applications now available for those operating short-term rental properties. Short-term rentals like Airbnb, VRBO, etc. offer alternative accommodations for tourists, larger groups, and medium-term occupants. The unit or part of a unit is rented out for less than 28 consecutive days. The application process and guidelines aim to optimize the host and occupant experience while mitigating potential negative impacts on neighbourhoods. The process to register a short-term rental property is as follows:

Building Division – conducts an on-site inspection to ensure applicable zoning, property standards and Ontario Building Code compliance. Fee: $258.22. Contact building@cityssm.on.ca or phone 705-759-5410.

Fire Services – conducts an on-site inspection to ensure Ontario Fire Code compliance. Fee: $144.07. Contact fire@cityssm.on.ca or phone 705-949-3333.

Finance Division – confirms that Municipal Accommodation Tax (MAT) return form(s) have been completed. MAT return forms may be found at saultstemarie.ca/mat. Contact MAT@cityssm.on.ca or phone at 705-759-5278.
Applicants submit completed sign-off forms and an application fee of $50 to the City Clerk’s Office at 99 Foster Drive. An appointment is required. Acceptable forms of payment include cash, debit or e-transfer. Licenses for short-term rentals will be valid for 3 years. For more information, visit the City’s website at
