Public Works winter maintenance update

Monday, December 13, 2021

With the significant snowfall received over the weekend and fluctuating temperatures, the City’s Public Works team would like to provide the following updates and reminders.

Staff are working to keep the roadways safe and clear. Snow will be cleared first from the main and collector roadways. The clearing of residential areas and designated sidewalks will be delayed until the main roadways and collector roads are cleared and safe. This will likely take place during the night and into the morning.  Sidewalks should not be blocked at any time in order to facilitate snow removal. With warmer temperatures, staff are focused on opening catch basins to avoid flooding. Residents are reminded that the snow plowed to the end of their driveway and high windrows during a significant snow event is their responsibility and may be more than usual.

Motorists are reminded to drive according to the conditions and to give snowplow operators room to clear routes safely and efficiently. Under By-law 77-200-5(14), parking of vehicles on city streets is not permitted during the winter months between midnight and 6 a.m. however, during a winter event, residents are also asked to not park on city streets during the day. This will assist in the efficiency of snow removal.

The City of Sault Ste. Marie thanks residents for their patience and cooperation during its clean-up efforts. For more information, residents may contact Public Works at 705.759.5201 or email pwt@cityssm.on.ca
