City services holiday information

The City of Sault Ste. Marie would like to advise residents of its hours of operation for services provided during the holiday season. 
 
Administrative Offices: Closed December 24 (beginning at noon), 27, 28 and January 3. This includes the Cemetery office, Ronald A. Irwin Civic Centre, Provincial Offences Office, GFL Memorial Gardens office, Sault Transit office, Fire Services Administration and Public Works and Engineering Services. For 24-hour emergency service requests, call Public Works at 705-759-5201.  
 
Arenas: City operated arenas (John Rhodes and McMeeken) will close December 24 at 4 p.m. and will reopen on December 27 for scheduled events. All arenas will be open December 31 until 4 p.m. for scheduled events only. All facilities are closed January 1. Free holiday skating is sponsored by Algoma Steel. Visit saultstemarie.ca/skating for the schedule.    
 
GFL Memorial Gardens: Administrative and Box Office is closed December 25 to 27. For a complete list of hours, visit gflgardens.ca. The arena will be open over the for scheduled programming and vaccination clinics only. The arena will close at 4 p.m. on December 24 and 31 and will be closed on January 1.  
 
John Rhodes Community Centre Pool: For a holiday schedule, visit johnrhodespool.ca or call 705-759-5419. 
 
Northern Community Centre: Closed December 24 at 4 p.m. and will reopen on December 27. Open December 31 until 4 p.m. and will be closed January 1. December 20 through to January 2, the Northern Community Centre is open for scheduled events only.  
 
Ermatinger•Clergue National Historic Site: Open December 23 until 4 p.m. Closed December 24 to January 3.  
 
Seniors Centres (Drop-In & Northern Community Centre Seniors 55+): Closed December 24 to January 3.  
 
Public Library: December 24, the James L. McIntyre Centennial Library will be open from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., and the North Branch will be closed. All library locations will be closed on December 25 to December 28. On December 31, the James L. McIntyre Library will be open from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and the North Branch will be open from 12 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. All libraries will be closed January 1 and reopen Tuesday January 4, 2022. 
 
Garbage and Recycling Collection: There is no impact to garbage or recycling collection during the Christmas and New Year holiday. Garbage and recycling will be collected on your regularly scheduled day.  
 
All garbage must be in the roll out cart and meet the City’s weight restrictions. Bag tags must be adhered to any bags beyond the roll out cart capacity. Bag tags can be purchased at various locations throughout the City. Visit saultstemarie.ca/bagtags for more information.   
 
Cardboard, steel cans, aluminum containers, glass bottles, #1 and #2 plastics and all wrapping paper that is not foil or cellophane can be recycled.    
 
Natural Christmas trees, towels, blankets and books can be dropped off at the Clean North collection depot at the Cambrian Mall parking lot December 26 to January 8. Also accepted are DVDs, music CDs and empty prescription bottles with lids. No Styrofoam will be collected. All Styrofoam can be placed with regular garbage pick up. No cardboard/paper, wrapping paper or boxboard will be collected. Residents are encouraged to use their recycling bins for cardboard and paper.  
 
The Landfill site located at 402 Fifth Line East will be closed December 27, 28 and January 3. 
 
Sault Ste. Marie Transit: Regular transit – last buses depart the terminal December 24 at 5:30 p.m. Regular transit will not operate December 25 and 26. Last buses depart the terminal December 31 at 11:15 p.m. No regular transit on January 1. The transit office will close at noon on December 24 and will be closed December 25, 26 and January 1. Parabus service – last pick up or return on December 24 will be at 5:30 p.m. Parabus will run December 25 and 26. The last pick up or return on December 31 will be at 11:15 p.m. No Parabus service on January 1.  
 
Free downtown parking: December 20 to December 31, 2021, free parking is available at all meters, pay and display units, and two-hour municipal parking lots in the downtown area. The holiday exemption does not include parking in accessible spaces without a permit, any identified no parking areas, fire routes and private (permit only) lots.
