Public Works winter operations update

Tuesday, December 31, 2019

With the significant weather event Monday evening, the City’s Public Works team would like to provide the following updates and reminders.

Staff are working to keep the roadways safe and clear. The winter storm event has caused trees and power lines to fall creating issues for snow clearing. Public Works crews continue with plowing throughout the day and ask residents to avoid parking on roadways, if at all possible. There are several sidewalks that are not cleared due to fallen trees and power line issues. Downed wires should always be considered energized and dangerous. Do not approach or drive over a downed power line.

Sidewalks should not be blocked by vehicles at any time in order to facilitate snow removal. Residents are reminded that the snow plowed to the end of their driveway during a significant snow event is their responsibility and may be more than usual.

Motorists are reminded to drive according to the conditions and allow space for heavy equipment operators to clear and sand roadways safely and efficiently. The parking by-law remains in effect with motorists not permitted to park on city streets during the winter months between midnight and 6 a.m. however, during a winter event, motorists are also asked to not park on city streets during the day. This will assist in the efficiency of snow removal.

Residents are reminded not to place garbage and recycling carts out the night before collection as this will cause issues with snow plowing and snow removal. Garbage and recycling carts should be placed curbside before 7 a.m. the morning of the designated collection day. Collection will not occur on New Year’s Day for both garbage and recycling.  For the revised schedule, please see the City's Holiday Operations Schedule.
