Mayor's Youth Advisory Council

The City of Sault Ste. Marie Mayor's Youth Advisory Council (MYAC) provides a voice for the youth of Sault Ste. Marie, while advising City Council of important issues that concerns the City's younger population. The MYAC is composed of up to 12 youth from Sault Ste. Marie. The council meets monthly either virtually or at the Civic Centre.

Council Goals

  • To continue work on projects initiated by the previous Council
  • Educate youth in our community about MYAC
  • To act as a positive advocate for youth in our community
  • To support events created by the MYAC that relate to the mandate
  • Administer the Youth Initiatives Fund

Council Year and Time Commitment

The MYAC term runs from September to June, with meetings held on the first Wednesday of each month. Members can be reappointed at the end of the term, if they so choose.

MYAC members should expect to devote between eight to 13 hours per month on council-related activities. High school students can use time spent on MYAC activities towards their community service hours.

Eligibility

To serve on the council, youths must be between the ages of 14 and 24 and reside in the City of Sault Ste. Marie. Youths under the age of 18 will need the consent of a parent or guardian to apply. Applicants must be enrolled in secondary or post-secondary school while serving on the Council.
