Trunk Road

Notice of Study Commencement:
Municipal Class Environmental Assessment For Trunk Road Flooding Mitigation

Map of Trunk Road study area.

The Study
The City of Sault Ste Marie has initiated a Municipal Class Environmental Assessment to identify and evaluate future alternatives to mitigate flooding within the general vicinity of the Trunk Road and Fournier Road intersection in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. The subject watercourse extends southerly to the east of Queensgate Boulevard, crossing Queen Street and River Road, where it ultimately discharges to the St. Marys River. Improvements may include additional culverts or increased culvert sizing, the cleanout and reshaping of ditches and channels, the establishment of a flood control channel, and/or the establishment of stormwater management features. An opportunity exists to improve stormwater conveyance and incorporate stormwater management for future infill development projects in the area.

The Process
The project is being planned following a Schedule B in the Municipal Class Environmental Assessment 2023. The process includes the identification of problems and opportunities, evaluation of alternative solutions, consultation with stakeholders, assessment of potential effects and identification of reasonable measures to mitigate adverse effects. A key component of the process will be consultation with interested stakeholders (public and review agencies). A Public Information Centre (PIC) will be held in the coming weeks to consult with interested parties on the project, discuss environmental impacts (if any), and identify reasonable measures to mitigate potential adverse impacts.

How to Get Involved
Public consultation is invited and encouraged. To get involved, you can contact us at any time to express your interest and be added to the study contact list, or interested people can attend the PICs once scheduled.

Further details regarding the PICs, including the time and location, will be publicly advertised and mailed to those on the contact list in a subsequent notice. As materials become available, they will be posted here, on the project webpage.
