Use of Permits

Building officials use building permits as a vital step in the enforcement of codes. You have a major investment in the home or business you are about to build or remodel. If that home or business building does not comply with the codes, the value of your investment could be reduced. Applying for a building permit notifies the Building Official that you are constructing or remodelling a building so that he or she can ensure that the regulations in the Ontario Building Code are followed.

Remember: It is unlawful to start construction before obtaining a permit. It is also smart to get a permit so that you can take advantage of the professional help and assurance of the Building Division. In many cases, the architect or contractor will obtain permits on your behalf - but remember that as the owner of the building, you are responsible for compliance.
