Applying for a Licence

First time applicants must first receive lottery licencing approval by providing the municipality with the following documents:
 
  • Copy of their mandate, articles of incorporation, letters patent
  • Current board of director's list
  • Current projected budget
  • Previous year's financial statement
  • Copy of their by-laws
  • Copy of their Revenue Canada charitable letter, if applicable
  • An outline of the specific programs and services the organization has offered in Ontario for the past year
Prior to an eligible organization receiving a lottery licence they will need to:

  • Determine what type of lottery scheme your organization intends to conduct
  • Obtain the appropriate application form from the City Clerk's Department, Level 4, Civic Centre, 99 Foster Drive or from the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario website
  • Complete the form according to the instructions on the form and the policies provided or as set out in the guide for that lottery event
After receiving lottery approval, things to include with the application form:
 
  • Licence fee in the form of a cheque written off of your organization's lottery trust account, made payable to the Corporation of the City of Sault Ste. Marie
  • Proper signatures in blue ink
  • For Raffle applications, a sample ticket which has all proper information on it as per the Raffle terms and conditions
  • Detailed listing of use of lottery proceeds that are consistent with the direct delivery of your organization's mandate
The following questions may be used to determine the eligibility of the applicant:

  • Does the organization qualify as a charitable or religious organization?
  • Is the organization established to provide charitable services in Ontario and use proceeds for objects or purposes which benefit Ontario residents?
  • Does the organization restrict its mandate to any segment of the community?
  • Does a significant portion of the community benefit by the fundraising of the applicant?
  • Is the applicant properly organized such that it is separate from any other organization? i.e. legally, financially, organizationally
  • Has the applicant been in operation for at least one year and have a proven charitable mandate? If not, it is not eligible.
  • Are there at least three persons who will assume full responsibility for the operation and conduct of the event?
  • What will the proceeds of the licenced event be used for and is the intended use consistent with the classification?
  • Does the organization have a place of business in Ontario?
